LGBT characters and how they are portrayed in Japanese media has been bothering me for a while. Do you remember that on twitter I said I already did an (small) comment on it? I found where it was, after all was when I posted the captures of the first ep of Last Friends (http://pinkujisatsu.livejournal.com/213901.html)

there are films & dramas, the problem is what role these characters play. Most of the times they are very stereotyped characters or the laughing ones, there to make comic relief.
Also a lot of films have second rate actors & their stories tend to be over dramatic ones with lots of forbidden love and shit XDD (truth to be told, I didn't watch all of them so this can't be said as a rule)

from what I've seen from your list, and the additions I sent, I would say that Juri Ueno's portrayal is the most ground-breaking. She was not only one of the leads (I still believe Juri was the lead, not Masami xD), the drama was fairly popular, it won a bunch of awards for Juri, and Ruka didn't die or was evil... all in all, the character seems like a good representation of people with gender identity.

but what really bothered me about Juri character in Last Friends was she was with gender indentity, which is good to be portrayed, but I hoped when it started that she will be a lesbian, one without any gender issues.

Actually, I was surprised she had gender issues, since in most Western countries gender issues are kinda taboo.

I thought it was interesting too see/hear/read your average Asian viewer saying, so Ruka likes Michiru coz she is really a guy, and that's normal.

I can't point out any other series that dealt with it like that. Never seen a transgendered person... or possible future transgendered person, in the case of Ruka... be one of the leads in a show. Even gays and lesbians are just secondary characters on most shows... except for Will & Grace, which is pretty much just good laughs. And it's possible that Glee wouldn't be such a smash hit if Kurt had been the main character, instead of Rachel and her love triangles and the music.

Just thinking about Ruka, I want to give her one big hug. xD

What I didn't like about Last Friends was how much Ruka and Michiru's relation was highlighted in the first 2 or 3 episodes, only to be dropped in favor of seeing Sousuke beating Michiru and everyone else in the cast but Eri. LOL It just became tedious and repetitive, and made me hate Ryo so much.

Last Friends is one of interesting dramas that make me want to rant LOL but my focus back then was Ryo's character.

yep I watched many japanese boys love movie. it's so subtle and make me think that for a country like Japan where pairing is like their fan service and their boys and men are pretty, their LGBT movies are not main stream.
and I read those comments at AfterElton. yea apparently, LGBT is still kind of minority
I've watched mostly those boys love, renai shindan if there was subtitle out there LOL
mostly end up make me want to change the story line LOOOOOL
eventho almost all western LGBT movies also mostly have sad ending tho XD
and I forget the title most of the time because it didnt leave any impression
I like Korean movies better .. eventho it's sad and all but they working on the issues better I think. i dunno tho XDDDD
the newest Korean drama that has Gay role is Life Beautiful. haven't start to watch it yet tho but from the caps or gifts, it's pretty good XDDDD

oh btw, I stopped watch Bing Bang Juvenile because it has GHOST!!!! O.o OMG I was so shock I watched it at night and alone in my room LOOOOL

will search those dramas and movies XDDDDDD
